What exactly is SLIT?

Sublingual allergy treatment drops, also known as sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT), involve administering small doses of allergens under the tongue. Over time, exposure to these allergens helps desensitize the immune system, drastically reducing allergic reactions. Although there is no cure for allergies, some patients are in fact “cured” of their allergies as their symptoms never come back after SLIT treatment. SLIT has been used for many years in Europe where it is considered the treatment of choice for desensitizing patients to airborne allergens.

Currently in the U.S, most allergists use weekly allergy shots to desensitize patients. The Allergy and Asthma Care of Brooklyn is one of the only allergy clinics in Brooklyn providing an alternative to allergy shots to treat environmental allergies.

What are the Benefits?

Effectiveness

Clinical studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of sublingual immunotherapy in reducing allergy symptoms and medication use in pediatric and adult patients, providing long-term relief and improving quality of life. Desensitization to environmental allergens has also been shown to decrease the likelihood of developing asthma in pediatric patients.

SLIT is ideal for children (including young kids), patients who are needle phobic, patients who have busy lives and cannot come to the office for weekly allergy shots as well as patients who often travel.

Non-Invasive Administration

Unlike allergy shots, which require injections, sublingual drops offer a non-invasive alternative that is well-tolerated by children, eliminating the fear and discomfort associated with needles.

Convenient and Ease of Use

Sublingual drops can be administered at home, making them a convenient option for busy patients and families and eliminating the need for frequent visits to healthcare facilities.

Safety Profile

Sublingual allergy treatment drops have a favorable safety profile, with fewer systemic side effects compared to allergy shots. This makes them suitable for use in pediatric patients, offering peace of mind to parents and caregivers.

What else should I know?

How long do I need to be on SLIT treatment?

Same as allergy shots, SLIT is recommended for 3-5 years.

Are there any side effects?

SLIT is considered very safe which is why the treatment can be given at home. Unlike allergy shots, there have been no reported cases of fatality (death) from SLIT.. Common side effects include mild itching at the site (under the tongue) which typically goes away within minutes

Who should NOT use this treatment?

Anyone with poorly controlled asthma should not start SLIT. We would need to get your asthma under control first. Also, anyone on a blood pressure medication called a beta blocker should not be on this treatment. Finally, we do not start this treatment in patients who are pregnant.

What does it taste like?

The drops taste very good. Patients say that they taste like candy :)

Other Important Considerations

Who should NOT use this treatment?

Sublingual treatments are considered “off label” meaning that this treatment is not covered by insurance companies. The choice to start SLIT is a personal one as patients must weigh the out of pocket costs against the time it takes for them to come to the office, wait 30 minutes after an injection and the copays for their allergy shot visits (if applicable).

Before initiating sublingual immunotherapy, patients should undergo a comprehensive allergy evaluation to confirm the diagnosis and determine the appropriate treatment plan. Individualized assessment and patient selection are essential to ensure safety and efficacy.

Sublingual allergy treatment drops offer a gentle, effective, and convenient option for managing allergies in pediatric patients. By desensitizing the immune system to allergens, these specialized drops provide long-term relief from allergy symptoms and improve quality of life for children and their families.  With Dr. Charlot’s innovative sublingual drops, relief is within reach for all patients - young and old.
